Uncle Lee. thank you for this very interesting dramatic story of Zi Yean. This is so far the best I have 'heard' since rediffusion started. And the nest written of all your other thread like "red undies".....
Now I will support Mr. Yean at his 165 Stirling Rd stall. One hardware shop boss ever told me about this fantastic ZiChar stall there sometimes ago, and have all praises for his cooking. Now I know why ....
Just thinking....how wonderful when we are eating his Zi Char and dishes while watching the new TV series soap opera... The Story of Ah Yean..

Went for their tim sum this morning...dissappointed.
Tried a few dishes...
Char siew bao- Average size. Skin is thick...fillings very little and loosely packed, and kind of dry, tastes so so only.
Fun cheong with prawn fillings- Comes with four medium size whole prawns, which doesn't have much of that sweet prawny taste, so so only. The fun, skin wrapping the fillings, is damn thick! Texture so so only.
Siew mai- Medium size. Not much of pork sweetness in it. Taste kind of artificial sweet, due to seasoning to cover the fresh sweetness of pork which it is lacking.
Fish porridge- Average size serving. Porridge is so damn plain, tastes like just cooked with plain water, no base at all! Fish is fine, average.
Sweet and sour sichuan soup with handmade noodle- Average serving. It's noodle is smooth and with nice texture and flavour. Soup is good.
Wouldn't go back for their tim sum again.

I have been to jln tiong. was a place i discovered by accident. not too bad. but am not dim sum person.

if u really luv value for money kinda of zhi char...proceed to the the mei ling st hc at night...
u will find a odd couple...an auntie who would take ur order in ENGRISH..and her skinny sinewy husb...
and keep an eye for live comedy...they will squabble and yell at each other...very funny and comical one...very impromptu..
good zhi char...super duper cheap. order the claypot fishhead. so many charpalang thrown in...only betwen $10 - 13 depend on the size of the grass carp head. things like roast pork, tofu, yam, pak choy...etc...
a pot of it will be suffice to serve about 3 to 4 persons...if u wanna economise.
normally this is what i would order:
1. sambal kangkong - $3
2. har cheong kai or deep fried chicken in fermented bean paste
3. ginger/ shallot beef
4. fu yong egg or bittergourd fried with egg
5. kor lo yok or sweet sour pork or pai kut wong...s/s ribs
6. ma por tofu
7. claypot fishhead
of course there are more, the skinny chef can whips up...;9)
if u order all the above, i think less than $35...rice is only 30c per bowl.

It is call UNCLE ROJAK, inside eating house call Blessed Food Lane. At ground floor of Fortune Centre, Middle Road. The reason it is call vegetarian because the uncle does not use prawn paste, instead he use some fruit sauce. very unqiue, fresh. You still get the yu tiao, pineapple, turnip, cucumber, towgay, towpok..
Your criteria is alittle difficult to meet, it reminds me of one place in SIngapore, but no longer exist..BUGIS STREET. Those days many different types of simple chinese food can be found there and plenty of free parking allowed along road side.
At the moment can think of "Hong Kong Street Chun Kee" at Alexandra Rd/Bt Merah Lane BLK125(opp Alexandra Hospital). They have nice 'San Lo' that is mixing fish with towgay and Horfun-signature dish and many other simple dishes. This is the original stall that started at commonwealth drive. Carparks around the HDB block.
The other being, San Hoi San at Eng Hoon Street. Plenty of parking nearby Tiong Bahru area. Their seafood taofoo is nice, chicken season with prawn paste.
Hua Zhu Restaurant at corner of Blk 4,Queen's Rd(above the carpark). This is a nice open restaurant serving cantonese food. The boss left a Hotel and started this food outlet about 20years ago. Plenty of parking space at groung level. Reasonable price, at hotel standard food.
