butchie's mum was a big woman. very fierce and very strong. i remember this auntie pretty well. she was a super cook and nonya was her speciality. her nonya curries up till now i still haven't tasted one that can beat hers. too bad she was gone before i could learn from her. her kuehs lagi shiok. very very fragrant and melts in ur mouth type. goodness...i AM drooling now as i write...pai seh...gotta get tissue paper to wipe saliva...
butchie's dad left much to be desired. a hopeless good for nothing chap. and hell he was damn powderful. every year, butchie would have a new brother or sis...i can't even recall how many brothers and sisters cousins belonging to the butchie tribe...i think it suppose to be 9 or 10...anyway not important.
my grandma - my mum's side - even had to help to support this whole brood by giving them monthly allowance. grandma then was a very enterprising woman. she set up a small chaparlang store in this kampong.
in the morning, she sold prawn mee, coffee, tea and other breakfast goodies. she sold her stuffs very cheap and affordable. i still remembered 'cos almost every morning i would eat my breakfast there, a bowl of prawn mee soup or dry one only cost 20c. coffee/tea 10c. afternoon, she sold provisions goods and titbits. she also bought a ice grinder and sold ice kachang. u know the ball type with red beans filling and coated in multi colored syrups. she made all these ingredients herself. in a way, grandma was loaded. so supporting butchie's large brood of brothers and sisters was no problem to her.
i heard from mum that butchie's father, my uncle was a real teekopeh. when butchie was about 15 or so, the old man molested her quite often. i didn't know this secret until the death of butchie very attached to elder sister. i suspected she was also being molested.
she married quite young and was quite a happy mother of 2. then suddenly one day, everyone was shocked to learn that she committed suicide by leaping off her flat. up till today no one knew the reason. they were saying she got hexed or what....but i suspected it was her past trauma coming to haunt her and her guilt and depression killed her.
it was a traumatic event for the teenager butchie. the next couple of years when we gathered during chinese new year, her mannerism started to change. she was evolving to be like a male. come to think of it, i had never seen her wearing skirts any more. always in jeans and casual man shirt. even her hair was cut short into crew cut 2 by 4. her size ballooned to be manly. if u look her from the back, u won't be able to tell she's girl.
butchie after the transformation couldn't hold on long to a job. she would always be made the laughing stock in her work place. she drank. she smoked. she talked vulgarities.....all her action and her mannerism were manly. there wasn't a tinge of feminity left inside her.
then she started dating filippino girls. maids or nurses or whatever....so long it was girl and not man. she was really big hearted and spent all her salary to lavish gifts on her gfs. exactly what goondu man would do to a gf.
finally she had enough of ostracising from her workplace, she quit for the last time and set up her own business after acquainting a cheena mei mei.
she was head over heel with this cheena spider spirit who later made use of her beauty and kettok and absconded with butchie's lifesaving....poor butchie was in dire state. her brothers and sisters refused to help her financially 'cos they had impression that she squandered all the money herself by lavishing gifts on her string of gfs...filippinos, cheena meimei...and even some locals...she really behaving like a male rolanto except she used money to entice all her gfs. in a way, her reputation among the cousins was real bad :9(
i remember once we were having a wedding dinner hosted by a cousin. she was sitting at the same table with me. all the fellow cousins tekkan her like anything. they swanned(made sarcastic remarks) her on how good her business acumen knowing that she was now in terrible debts...and swanned her when going to get married....which gf she would be marrying. butchie was dumb struck. as for good o me, i couldn't take it anymore. i stood up and remarked loudly to the bunch of insenstive callous cousins. I said, " u all dun have to worry, if no one marries butchie, i take her as my wife!" that shocked everyone and shut up their gapes.
after hearing my bold and outspoken remarks, hell, i invited problem for myself....butchie like fallen in love with me. the next day and the next day, she kept calling me and asked me whether i meant it...u know to marry her if she couldn't find a male mate....mati, leetahsar...u and ur impromptu show of heroism.
I told her, ok lor...if u wish we get married lor...the way i retorted her finally without hesitating shocked her out of space. from there on she stopped calling. so quiet for me. heng ah! saved!
not long ago, i heard heaven blessed her and let her strike big big in a lottery. and that was the last time i heard of her. she disappeared just like that. she had wound up her business. i heard from my other cousins, she had left sinkietown and went to live in philippines where she had a very faithful and loyal gf there.
i can only hope butchie is now finally happy and found her heaven in a foreign land. hope she is blissful with her filippino gf....i think the people there are so much more accomodating and tolerating than the so called educated "gracious" sinkies here...see even my own other cousins ostracise her mercilessly....
